For a quick introduction to the ideas behind the formation of Real-Time Economy community, it is advised to check this page first.
Real-Time Economy knowledge and research
The diffusion and adoption processes of new technologies and real-time processes (e-invoicing, e-procurement, e-government, e-tax, RFID applications etc.) open new interesting avenues for research. In the real-time economy community, the knowledge and research section is organized into three subsections. By clicking the links below (E-payments & E-invoicing, Electronic procurement, Electronic government services), you can access and share information concerning each of these topics.
The RTE community is a meeting place and forum for the RTE fellows to publish their reflections on real-time issues. Follow the link below to read their statements. For information on how to apply to become an RTE fellow, please contact development@realtimeeconomy.net.
Real-Time Economy research projects
Real-Time Economy Program
Real-Time Economy (RTE) Program aims at promoting new technologies that enable a more real-time economy, processes, and services. RTE program was founded in collaboration with Tieto and Aalto University School of Economics in 2006 and it is partly funded by the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES).
Over the years the program has progressed through projects such as Full SEPA (20.10.2006-31.3.2008) which focused on payments and e-invoicing, the second was Full Value Chain (1.1.-31.12.2008) which broadened the focus to other value chain processes. The third project was Fully Integrated Accounting 1 (FIA1) (1.1.2009-30.6.2010) which will focus on e-accounting, e-archiving and e-auditing.
The fourth and currently on-going project - Fully Integrated Accounting 2 (FIA2) - started in the beginning of August 2010 and will continue to promote digitalization and harmonization of the financial value chains. The objectives in FIA2 are:
- Piloting and implementing Unified Reporting Code that harmonizes the mandatory business reporting of the companies. More details about reporting code at http://www.raportointikoodisto.fi/
- DevelopFully Integrated Payroll and HR reporting scheme, which harmonizes payroll and HR reporting of the companies
- Develop tools and practices that facilitate digitalized and automated accounting processes
- Develop e-trade functionalities and automated cash flow functions.
- Test Split Payment concept on VAT payments
- Facilitates incorporation of national and international e-invoicing standards (ISO20022)
- Continue promoting e-invoicing in Finland and Europe
- Generate high quality academic research in the field of real-time economy
- Contribute to the development of the Services in the Real-Time Economy Competence Centre in Aalto University
The starting point for the program objectives is the vision of integrated financial management for the future.

Real-Time Economy Competence Center, HSE
At the Aalto University Shcool of Economics, the Real-Time Economy competence center conducts research related to the implementation of information technology that aims at real-time business processes. In the first stage of our project, we focus on electronic invoicing. Recently, we have interviewed companies and organizations that have adopted electronic invoicing. These organizations have already obtained considerable savings from e-invoicing. In our project, based on the interview data, we examine, e.g., what are the critical success factors in the adoption process, what are the effects of electronic invoicing on buyer-seller relationships, and what are the realized savings from the adoption of electronic invoicing practices.
List of current research in the HSE RTE Competence Center can be found here.
