There are many initiatives to enable new ways of mobile payments and identification. It will be interesting to see which ones become the industry standard.
We did originally try to use bluetooth for proximity payments - turned out to be too slow - now it is rfid and NFC phones that will rule the waves.
Everyday payments are the most important things to get to the mobile - to create the user habit.
could the system that payments are made by calling a special nr, for example the laundry machine in a HOAS appartment, or, a soda can from a machine at HSE, be expanded, we have enough numbers and if security would be an issue, the called nr could request a special extra number that the caller has to enter.
Hendrik's idea is good. Isn't it basically the same as SMS payment? The only thing is that it will be charged from your mobile subscription bill and teleoperators typically take quite large provision from the payment to their own pocket. Also, some of us have phones provided by our emploers which makes it impossible to do personal payments with mobilephone.
I have been recently participating quite frequently to discussions with banks, operators, mobilephone manufacturers etc. around mobile payments. Everyone agrees that mobile devices will be the one and the best tool for payments but we are still waiting for some standardization work to be done. NFC (near field communications, based on RFID) will be the best techonology for this but it takes few years before it's in mass production in all phones. Another hot discussion topic is, where the secure element should be stored for the end-users secure identification. There are currently 3 options: in SIM-card, in mobile device or in memory card slot (only in high end devices). But while we wait decisions on these topics, there are already many use cases that we could do using currently available technology. See www.smarttouch.org
the dutch bank RABOBANK has since a few years its own mobile phone network, (actually kpn's) and is now rolling out a NFC, near field communication, payment system.
