Supermarkets in the Netherlands have grown tired of frequent robberies (200 last year and until April this year already 90 times) and expensive secured money transports. The current pricing wars among the supermarket chains probably also play their role here. Therefore they would like to reject all cash payments and solely accept electronic payments by 2014, according to CBL (an interest group who represents all supermarkets in the country) in Het Financiele Dagblad.
The organization has done research and claims the support of 87% of the respondents to only accept card payments. Mr. Roorda, chairman of the CBL, has announced that there are no technical limitations, only a solution has to be provided for those who for some reason cannot pay by card. The main consumer organization has spoken against the idea.
This might also provide opportunities for the wider introduction of mobile wallets and payment systems.
this would be illegal, in the Netherlands the euro currency is a legal tender that must be accepted !. changing this would have to be done in the law, as well as in the practice, to many people (students for example) can not have the benefit of allways enough saldo on an account to be able to pay wiht a card all the time.
