Green IT is an emerging topic and presents great opportunities for strategy development at companies and research institutions. These strategies include initiatives such as reducing overall power consumption, working to extend the useful life of products and providing equipment recovery and recycling services. There is a realization that IT is critical to driving a green agenda deep into organizations in response to macroeconomic changes, competitive pressures and existing inefficiencies in current IS infrastructure. At this year's ICIS conference, there was a track devoted to Green Information Technology (http://www.icis09.org/).
